This is really where the discrepancy between human and machine play lies. “Humans estimate, bots calculate, and they do so using a variety of methods,” says Smith. “Rather than putting two cards up against one they think your hand is, the bot compares one of its possible hands against a whole range of your possible holdings, so it gets an overall sense of who has the edge.”

Since there are 1,326 possible starting hands for hold’em, combinatorics allows for calculating precisely what fraction of these fall into a given range – monsters vs. Bluffs, for instance.

Drawing hands get overvalued constantly. You see a flush draw and it feels like it’s basically already there, so you chase without really checking whether the pot odds justify the call. Results-oriented thinking is another classic trap, get it in with 80% equity, lose anyway, and suddenly you’re convinced the play itself was wrong.

It wasn’t. Losing an 80% favorite one time in five is just variance doing its job. And a lot of players lock an opponent onto one specific hand (“he’s definitely got ace-king”) and never adjust that read as new cards fall, which leads to some real costly mistakes down the line.
